Fiordland National Park - Milford Sound

Discovering Milford Sound

While this was from our last trip to New Zealand, we felt compelled to share our experience at Milford Sound, often referred to as the "8th Wonder of the World." If you can make the time to travel here, you won't regret it. It’s about a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Queenstown, but the journey is just as breathtaking as the destination. Many bus trips are available, offering a relaxed way to soak in the stunning scenery along the way.

The Drive to Milford Sound

The drive to Milford Sound takes you through some of New Zealand's most picturesque landscapes. You'll wind through the Mount Aspiring National Park, past Lake Wakatipu, and traverse the Remarkables mountain range. The road is lined with towering peaks, lush rainforests, and sparkling lakes, making every turn a new visual delight. Along the way, keep an eye out for cascading waterfalls, particularly after rainfall, when they come to life, tumbling down the cliffs.

History of Milford Sound

Milford Sound holds deep significance in both Māori and New Zealand history. The Māori people, specifically the Tūhoe tribe, were the first inhabitants of the region, referring to it as Piopiotahi. According to legend, the demigod Maui carved the fjord out of the mountains as part of his journey to fish up the North Island.

In 1952, Milford Sound was officially designated as a national park, and it became part of the larger Fiordland National Park, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This area is celebrated for its remarkable natural beauty and ecological significance, showcasing unique flora and fauna.

A Rainy Day at Milford Sound, is a perfect day!

One of the most enchanting experiences at Milford Sound occurs on rainy days. While many travelers might hesitate to visit in the rain, this is when the fjord truly comes alive. The rainfall transforms the landscape, creating a multitude of temporary waterfalls that cascade dramatically down the cliffs. The lush green foliage becomes even more vibrant, and the mist adds an ethereal quality to the scenery.

Don’t let the weather deter you; a rainy day at Milford Sound offers a unique and breathtaking perspective on this incredible natural wonder. Whether you’re cruising through the fjord or taking in the views from the shore, Milford Sound is a destination that leaves a lasting impression.
