Napier

New Zealand’s Art Deco Gem

We arrived in Napier in the mid-afternoon, following a scenic two-hour drive from Rotorua. Known as New Zealand’s "Art Deco capital," Napier boasts a unique charm thanks to its architectural history.

Napier's Art Deco Heritage

Napier’s iconic Art Deco style stems from a remarkable rebuild after a massive earthquake in 1931, which destroyed much of the city. During the rebuilding, architects embraced the Art Deco movement, popular at the time, giving Napier its distinctive 1930s style with geometric shapes, bold colors, and intricate details. Today, the city is celebrated worldwide for its architecture and even hosts an annual Art Deco Festival.

Things to Do in Napier

While our time was limited, we soaked up the city’s vibe through leisurely shopping and strolls, admiring the historic facades and vibrant storefronts. Here are a few other things to do in Napier for anyone with a bit more time:

- Art Deco Walking Tour: Guided tours offer a deep dive into the city’s architecture and history, showing off the most iconic buildings and hidden details.

- National Aquarium of New Zealand: Located along the coastline, this aquarium is home to a range of marine life and showcases New Zealand's unique aquatic environments.

- Wine Tours: Napier is part of the Hawke’s Bay wine region, known for its fantastic wineries and cellar doors. Many offer tastings and tours for wine enthusiasts.

- Marine Parade: Napier’s oceanfront promenade is perfect for a relaxing walk with beautiful coastal views, sculptures, and landscaped gardens.

After browsing a few local shops, we made a memorable stop at Pak'n'Save, one of Marvin’s favorite grocery spots.

Napier is a blend of art, history, and scenic beauty, and we left wishing we had more time to explore. Next up was Wellington, our final stop on the North Island before making our way to the South Island. We couldn’t wait to dive into the vibrant city life of New Zealand’s capital!
