Exploring Auckland - From the Viaduct Harbour to Northland

Our recent adventure began as we touched down at Auckland International Airport, grabbed our rental car, and headed straight to our accommodation at QT Auckland. The hotel, located on the Viaduct Harbour, offers a modern vibe with fantastic waterfront views. However, it’s worth noting that while it's beautiful, it’s a bit of a stroll to the main city area. With Auckland's hills (think Sydney, but steeper!), make sure to take advantage of the Lime scooters or public transport if you want to zip around with ease—plus, parking in the CBD is limited and often paid.

Morning Trip to Devonport

A short drive or ferry ride from the city center, Devonport is a charming escape. We started our day with breakfast at Corellis Cafe, a spot I’d recommend in a heartbeat for its friendly service and delicious offerings. After fueling up, we set out to explore the historic military base in Devonport. Though it was never used in combat, the vast network of tunnels is truly remarkable, stretching for kilometers underground and giving you a taste of Auckland’s fascinating history.

Exploring Northland by Car

After our Devonport excursion, we hit the road, driving up through North Auckland and into Northland. With its scenic coastal views and rolling landscapes, exploring Northland by car is ideal for anyone looking to soak up the natural beauty of New Zealand.

Nightlife in Auckland: Comedy at the Basement Theatre

That night, we delved into Auckland’s nightlife, winding up at the Basement Theatre for a comedy show. This venue is a gem, and the lineup constantly changes, so it’s worth checking their website - https://basementtheatre.co.nz to see what’s on if you’re planning a visit. The atmosphere is laid-back and perfect for a fun night out.

Overall, Auckland was friendly, accessible, and full of surprises. Our journey continued to Hamilton, but Auckland definitely set the bar high for the rest of our New Zealand trip.
