Hamilton
Setting off early for Hamilton
Setting out early from Auckland, we were on a mission to reach Rotorua by the afternoon. But after hearing rave reviews about Hamilton Gardens the night before at the Basement Theatre (and with Marvin’s love of gardens) a stopover in Hamilton was a must.
Breakfast at Hayes Common
Our first stop was Hayes Common for breakfast, a local favorite overlooking a park that lines the Waikato River —Hamilton’s main river, winding its way through the city. The café had a relaxed vibe and offered beautiful views of the river, making it the perfect spot to start our day.
Exploring Hamilton Gardens
From there, we made our way to Hamilton Gardens. This isn’t just any garden—it’s a world unto itself! Established in 1960 and developed over decades, Hamilton Gardens is a series of thematic spaces representing different cultures, historical periods, and design styles. Here are some of the highlights:
- Italian Renaissance Garden: Enter a world of symmetry, sculptures, and classical Italian charm, as if stepping into a villa garden of 15th-century Florence.
- Japanese Garden of Contemplation: A tranquil escape with delicate blossoms, koi ponds, and a Zen-inspired layout perfect for a moment of quiet.
- Indian Char Bagh Garden: With vibrant floral patterns, water channels, and intricate designs, this garden mirrors the aesthetic of a Mughal paradise garden.
- Tropical Garden: Imagine stepping into a rainforest with lush plants, flowing waterfalls, and an exotic vibe that transports you to a tropical island.
- Modernist Garden: For a unique twist, this space celebrates mid-20th-century style with abstract sculptures, minimalist landscaping, and pops of bold color.
Plus a slice of Alice in Wonderland!
Each area feels like a miniature world, offering a surprising cultural and historical journey. There’s a small admission fee, which helps support the garden’s maintenance and expansions, and it’s well worth every cent.
After an inspiring morning wandering through these stunning settings, we hopped back in the car and continued our road trip to Rotorua. If you’re in Hamilton or passing through, make the time for Hamilton Gardens—it’s truly a gem in New Zealand’s North Island.
